Day 2 5743 feet of climbing 96 miles

Day 2 May 3, 2008We again woke to some soggy cool weather. This was after a wonderful stay in a motel that had no water pressure. The pressure was so bad it would not refill the toilet tank.Around noon the roads finally dried up. We will be looking forward to some sunny days. Glass on the roadway cause Ken to have another flat his second and the third of the tour so far.Our route and mileage is being planned around lodging which is sparse along our route in this area.We will come into some climbing for the next few days.

Day One 125.5 Miles 7590’ of climbing

This is the day one post, re arranged..

125.5 Miles 7590’ of climbing 9h 24m of pedaling

Day 1 - May 2, 2008 We awoke to the sounds of rain in Niantic on the day we planned our 6am departure. We decided to wait until 9AM to decide whether we would scrub our launch date. At 8:30 Joe made the call…… Lets GO! Team rider Al Nebelung called just as we started to mobilize and met us as we dipped our rear wheels into the water. JP Crozet and Herb wanted to see us off but it all happened to fast for them to arrive in time.

As we rolled out of town the drizzle started again and followed us all day. The roads almost dried at one point but it was very short lived. As we reached Branford Ken hit some road debris and with loaded bikes that is all it takes to pop a tire. We pulled off the road and made the repair. As we approached New Haven traffic increased. Our route took us through “the hood” but we slipped through almost unnoticed. The drizzle continued and we wished we had windshield wipers on our glasses. After getting through the traffic of New Haven we realized we had only traveled 60 of the 125 miles we had hoped to cover today. We were running late …real late. And now were going to leave the flat terrain of the coast and head northwest into the hills. It was obvious we would need some night riding before the day would be done. Our next stop was Bethel Bike in Bethel CT for a few more tubes “just in case”. Well that was a good idea because Tim slammed into a pothole and popped a tube a few miles later. Our planned destination was to cross the Hudson at Bear Mountain NY and spend the night. I know why they call it Bear Mountain and not Bear Hill. The last ten miles was basically up hill. Just what you want to end the day.We were happy to make our mileage our goal even if it did take until 9pm to do it.
